Back in March our very talented students from The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design Module 3 submitted work to our friends at Uppercase Magazine for their live brief.

We were so proud of the work that our students submitted for the Little U Magazine, which is the offspring of Uppercase Magazine – an occasional magazine/book for the young at heart!

UPPERCASE publisher / editor / designer Janine Vangool picked out her Top 12 designs from the work submitted which we proudly showcase below:

“This brief was very inspiring and challenging at the same time because I’ve work on a commercial life brief, I had to interpret the needs of the client, trying to make a product that reflected my style and it was new and therefore able to enrich my portfolio!!!!

In the end I was satisfied with the final result”.

“I thought the Uppercase commercial live brief was a great opportunity because it gave me the experience of designing while keeping the client and an audience in mind. I also had to think about details like scale and color for the intended end use product, and a really fun product at that! Plus, Janine was so generous with her comments about each piece and that kind of feedback is always helpful”.

“I found this Uppercase brief quite challenging at first as I struggled to think of an idea to work on, but once I had one, I really enjoyed it and found it quite exciting! It was great to have an opportunity to showcase a piece of my work to a high profile magazine like this and a bonus to receive some direct feedback about my work from Janine herself. Thanks for the opportunity!”

“I thought the brief was fun, it was interesting to think about the end use, and how best to create a design to work well with that use in mind. It definitely took me out of my comfort zone, and the end design was quite different for me, but I love it, and it’s helped to expand my portfolio, and generate new ideas for my artwork too”.

“Taking part in a live brief was exciting and pushed me out of my comfort zone. It was a great opportunity and gave me experience of working to a deadline and preparing a commercial design to industry standards”.

“I love Uppercase magazine so it was a dream come true to be able to submit a design for Janine. I thought dinosaurs would be perfect, as all children love them.  The beautiful colours found in Uppercase drove my colour palette.  I really loved her feedback especially as she mentioned she loved my “nice color choice”. She also suggested placing this design on a larger surface as it is very detailed, I now plan to have this design on notebooks and bags soon.”

“What I liked in this live brief is the challenge to do a design which fit both in the stripe and end paper. The other good thing about real brief is that we have to consider the audience of the magazine and of course we have deadline! The deadline helps me to do my best in a determinate time and to make choice and it’s not the easy part! The individual feedback at the end was really helpful. Now I have a new pattern for my portfolio”.

“The Uppercase live brief was great because it was fun, challenging, and made me think about designing for an end use I’d never considered before. I found it very beneficial to work to a commercial surface pattern design live brief for two key reasons: to get familiar with possible design expectations and limitations, and because it pushed me to produce an energetic quirky design which I’m pleased to add to my portfolio.”

“It was a really interesting and fun brief because creating a design that is youthful but also appeals to adults was quite different to previous briefs. Thinking about how a pattern would work on the endpaper and spine of a magazine was a great real-life challenge when planning the scale and layout of my design. And imagining my design being printed on such a lovely magazine was very motivational”.

A huge congratulations to all of our students who submitted to the Uppercase Magazine brief and we look forward to showcasing our Module 3 students work over the summer.
