Pattern design showcase part 9 – Module 1 (March 2014 class)

We are really pleased to showcase the beautiful work from our very talented Module 1 students of ‘The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design’ who took the course in March 2014. Today is the final part in our showcase series of the work our fantastic students have created over the 5 weeks in class.

84. Natasha Y Kirby - Chrysanthemum
“I feel the most powerful element of this course so far has to be the overwhelming support and encouragement from Rachael and the fellow members of class. It has help boost my confidence and taught me to not be afraid of sharing my work with the world, which, lets be honest is a pretty important part of the design process!!” – Natasha Kirby

83. Lynn Smallwood - Floating Dandalions

“The course has helped me develop as a designer by giving me the skills and confidence to develop motifs and create layered patterns.” – Lynn Smallwood

Amanda-Prouten-Guyatri

“This has been fantastic course. It takes you through pattern making step by step and makes it all very do-able and not at all overwhelming. From the sketching and inspiration boards to the technical workshops in Photoshop and Illustrator, the course is packed with information and tips to help and inspire budding surface pattern designers. The Facebook group is also very supportive. Thanks to Rachel and Beth for a great course. I can’t wait for the next modules!” – Amanda Prouten

85. Andrea Sayers - Oh What A Rainy Day!

“For me the most powerful parts of the course has been a combination of things: the course content and format – the way it is broken down into small  ‘bite size’ achievable and fun steps – this enables you to ‘just try one little bit more’ when you’re feeling it is all insurmountable!  The fact that an actual artist is opening up her process and studio – this sharing and openness is powerful because it is so welcoming and encouraging and generous. I enjoyed the physical format of the course – because you can tailor it to suit your own needs, abilities and available time. Finally, apart from the course itself the ongoing encouragement of the Facebook group – I’ll admit at first this was daunting as it was mostly people with much more time and making much faster progress, but gradually more people like me with other big commitments, (in my case a young family) came out of the woodwork and started sharing struggles, concerns (and also their work!) and it was so reassuring to know there are others pushing forward with sometimes only 10 minutes a day or less to do something!  For the first time since I was at art college in 1991 I feel like I might just be on some sort of focused path and not be the artistic failure I’ve been feeling for the last 20 odd years…thanks.” – Andrea Sayers

86. Jodie Tyndall - Fox and Fern

“The most powerful element of this course for me has been turning my sketches into vector format in illustrator and creating unique patterns. My patterns now have my own hand-illustrated elements and I feel as a designer I’m growing stronger every day.” – Jodie Tyndall

88. Sarah Bowskill - textured-leaves

“The daily messages/briefs we received were so inspiring, they have really motivated me to keep working and developing my own style. The online Facebook group was so encouraging, it was so nice to connect with other people with similar interests.” – Sarah Bowskill

87. Ornella Handwerker - Umbrellas

“I won’t talk about the fantastic organization, or the value of all the professional insights and the technical education: to me this course was especially valuable as it managed to create the ideal environment to …well, CREATE! It pulled off a perfect balanced between the relaxed, friendly, do-it-at-your-own-pass atmosphere, and the strong encouragement to putting oneself out there and “compete” in a very positive way to show the best you can do, to yourself in the first place. All the attention to the psychological aspect behind this challenge was really what got me back to the drawing board after many years, and made me actually believe that, even if it will take a long time, I CAN ACTUALLY DO IT!” – Ornella Handwerker

88. Ellie Young - Black and white flower“What I took away most from the course was getting back onto the road of creating! All the exercises really help you see things from many different design perspectives. As a designer, it has truly unleashed a brand new side of me. I am more confident, and really feel that I can make it in design!” – Ellie Young

89. Lisa Travis Geometric#01

“Module 1 was a wonderful experience. Turns out that I have already been working in very similar ways to the techniques covered in this module (i.e. creating mood boards, using photos for color palettes and saving all my sketches for future pieces). The workshop that demonstrated how to use buttons to create a box repeat was a great new way to approach pattern making, I enjoyed that exercise quite a bit. I look forward to learning more in Modules 2 and 3” – Lisa Travis

90. Lara Berry - Pop

“The most powerful element for me was going back to the ‘drawing board’ so-to-speak… experimenting, gathering inspiration – and looking at the world with a fresh eye again!” – Laura Berry

“This course has been amazing for me in many ways, helping me to develop a style, taking me back to the drawing board, opening up my eyes to the world around me and unleashing my love for pattern and colour. I am immensely looking forward to the next module.” – Karyn Johnstone

BettinaKilgus_Featherlight

“It was great to attend the Module 1, because I’ve learned to include my personal hand drawings and I’ve sharpened my senses for unexpected color combinations. This course has supported me to build up my own showcase for pattern designs.” – Bettina Kilgus
