ABSPSD_M3_2000PX_HR

Welcome back to the Make it in Design student showcase! We are so excited to reveal the first instalment of the beautiful and amazing design work our students created in Module 3,  The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design.  During their 5 weeks in class (completed September 2016), the Make it in Design students learned to monetise their designs and got to grips with the nitty gritty of freelancing, licensing, selling outright, and manufacturing. We have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the designs that have come out of this module and are incredibly excited about their futures in surface pattern design!

So here you have it – part one of five in our September 2016 Module 3 Student Showcase – enjoy!

Module 3 is a course crazy packed with invaluable information necessary to the building of my surface pattern design career. I’m thrilled to now possess all of the knowledge and insight provided, and without a doubt I feel more comfortable and better prepared to put myself and my work out there into the world.  I also must mention that the relationships and connections I’ve cultivated within the MIID community and in the private FB groups throughout all of the modules 1-3, has been an absolute blessing.

The course has been amazing. There is so much information, handy tutorials, and exercises to help you get through the course. What has been amazing for me, is the support by the team at Make it in Design, Rachael Taylor herself, as well as the other students. I am inspired everyday.

I am very happy for Module 3 which has allowed me to centre my energy in a better way in the world of Design Business. I was also able to focus on the development and process of what is a collection. Thanks to the community for the support. I just love it!

With the help of module 3, I created a comprehensive business plan, made a trade show plan, and gained confidence thanks to Rachael who so generously shared her business-building story.

This course has been an interesting journey. To learn how to be a surface pattern designer. Not just how to make patterns, but how  to sell and market your work and your ideas. This part, module 3 has been very informative and fun to do.

Module 3 covers vast amounts of incredible industry information and business planning. Having taken all previous modules, I now need to take stock & formulate my way forward. The live briefs are fantastic experience and I have particularly enjoyed interpreting client briefs and working to deadlines. As always it is a pleasure to be part of the wonderfully supportive MIID community. Looking forward to the UPB!

It has been really difficult to choose just one most powerful element of the course – for me the technical guides, the interviews with designers as well as the camaraderie of the students has made this such an enjoyable course. Rachael and the team have encouraged me to explore and to experiment and to go forward on my path towards surface pattern design full time.

Module 3 of the Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design pushed me to brave and I started getting my designs off the computer and onto products; I had fabric digitally printed, greetings cards produced, a design laser-cut into metal and cork back placemats manufactured. I also set up an online shop and made my first two sales! I now feel confident in my own ability to prepare files to send off to manufacturers.

This module has been intense, with a wealth of rich design inspiration, briefs and ideas as well as a massive amount of relevant and helpful information about breaking into the design industry. For me, the most powerful thing was learning about preparing your artwork for print and the different avenues available to us as designers. I’ve loved it and it’s helped me grow in confidence so very much.

It’s an invaluable course if you are feeling lost, like I was, about where to go next in your surface pattern design journey. With all the information about freelancing, selling, manufacturing, trade shows and so on I could realise what would be a good fit for my career right now so I can focus and go ahead. As in all ABSPD courses the generous and supportive Facebook community complements the information on the course in a perfect way.

What I enjoyed most about the course was that the topics covered were broken down in a way that made everything seem very achievable—from freelancing to exhibiting in trade shows. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you’re early in your career, but I felt encouraged to just stick with it, ask questions, progress little by little, and follow my own unique path to success.

Module 3 opened my eyes to all aspects of designing for the commercial world, some of which I had never considered. I always find the Bonus Technical Workshops the single most valuable aspect of each module because they advance my design skills and confidence like nothing else.

I have found all of the modules inspirational, not least because of the support and encouragement of not only the team but all of the participants too.  Feeling part of a creative community has been a really powerful element coupled with practical, down to earth and insider, in depth information. I just loved it.
