Welcome back to the latest instalment Make it in Design student showcase! We are so excited to reveal the second part of the beautiful and amazing design work our students created in Module 3, The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design.  During their 5 weeks in class (completed September 2016), the Make it in Design students learned to monetise their designs and got to grips with the nitty-gritty of freelancing, licensing, selling outright, and manufacturing. We have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the designs that have come out of this module and are incredibly excited about their futures in surface pattern design!

So here you have it – part two of five in our September 2016 Module 3 Student Showcase – enjoy!

Module 3 has certainly brought me closer towards my goal of becoming a working surface pattern designer. It lays out the groundwork with detailed information for running a business and I have now planned a workable route to achieve my dream. The most exciting part for me was being challenged by the live briefs to develop designs that I am proud of and having to comply with professional guidelines and deadlines.

The most powerful element of the course is always Rachael’s generosity of knowledge! And also the wonderful group; they help to boost you when you are feeling creatively down and praise you when you are awesome, which just keeps you going and growing. What a great combination to further a career!

I love designing surface patterns! But rather than designing with no particular market, client or trend in mind, Module 3 helped me focus on how and where my pattern designing fits into a larger business plan. This was super invaluable and has provided me with a business path forward.

Coming from a Graphic Design background, I have relished in the freedom from the design briefs. Even the most restrictive briefs have enabled me to explore and grow as an artist/designer. The most challenging yet deeply rewarding element of the course has been developing the skills involved in designing stand alone pieces that work cohesively as a collection.

Module 3 has been amazing!  It is packed full of more information than I could have ever imagined.  All of the knowledge of how the business side of things works has really given me new insight on how to run my business and motivation and inspiration to move forward with the whole idea at full speed.  It has re-excited my love of design and allowed me a better understanding of how to deal with the bushiness side of things without getting overwhelmed.
