Welcome back to the latest instalment Make it in Design student showcase! We are super excited to bring you the fourth part of the beautiful and amazing design work our students created in Module 3, The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design.  During their 5 weeks in class (completed September 2016), the Make it in Design students learned to monetise their designs and got to grips with the nitty-gritty of freelancing, licensing, selling outright, and manufacturing. We have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the designs that have come out of this module and are incredibly excited about their futures in surface pattern design!

So here you have it – part four of five in our September 2016 Module 3 Student Showcase – enjoy!

Module 3 gave me masses of ideas and a route map of how to get my name out there and make money from my designs. It felt like the jigsaw pieces of branding, style, products and promotion all came together. What I like about ABSPD is that there is no set style or design prescription which gives the whole experience a real sense of shared learning, mutual encouragement and very real design creativity.

Module 3 was packed full of information that would normally take years of experience to gain. Although the course was jam-packed for the duration of 5 weeks, the amount of insight given will last for many months, if not years to come! I have gained so much more confidence to fulfil my dreams and steer my career in the direction of my choosing.

M3 helped me to think about a suitable way for me to sell and licence my designs. I also got some new inspiration and feedback from the MIID community which encouraged me to develop my ideas.

I have enjoyed and learnt so much with this course, I want to give the MIID team a massive thank-you! One of the most important things for me has been (and still is) the Facebook groups, as it offers constant help and support from fellow designers and it feels as if the course is still ongoing!

After completing Module 3 I finally feel ready to launch my career as a Surface Pattern Designer. The information that I have received has been invaluable and it will continue to guide me through my career for many years to come. Even though the course has finished I have now been given the opportunity to take part in live briefs from top companies, I also have free access to WGSN and more importantly the ongoing support of my fellow designers. I really do feel part of an amazing group which I am sure will continue

The most powerful element in this course is hard to pick because all the information is really helpful, but i would highlight all the tips about freelancing and how to develop your business. As a designer, I have a better understanding about how to deal with future situations.

Module 3 of ABSPD was a real eye opener for me. It really got me thinking of my goals for the future in all areas of working as a freelance illustrator and pattern designer. The amount of information will take a while to sink in, it was so in depth and full of practical information and knowledge. I also loved the possibility of taking part in life briefs, amazing opportunity.

I feel Module 3 has given me the focus, information and support I need now to help me develop my designs in a new direction. Using the valuable tips, contacts and advice Rachael and other designers have shared about the industry, I feel new opportunities and possibilities have opened up for me. I  particularly found the information on manufacturing, licensing, agents and trade fairs useful .I found the technical videos, live briefs and fantastic WGSN resource to be so useful in developing my portfolio. Finally but importantly the online classroom has been so supportive and inspiring.

I have really enjoyed Module 3, which has taught me things about the industry that I never got from my University course! I think doing the previous 2 modules before hand really maximised what I took away from Module 3. I am a lot more confident about going forward now, even though I have tried to break into this industry for so many years! I found that there was so much information on the course, so I am very happy knowing I can refer back to it at a later date if I need to. A supportive community has definitely helped me progress over all three modules. Overall…so many positives.
