3 essential tools for type in Adobe Illustrator. This quick and easy to follow tutorial covers the new updated Adobe type shortcuts, how to easily place text inside of shapes and how to use the type on a path tool options.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

PLACE TYPE IN A SHAPE

  1. Make your shape, type out your words and outline your type.
  2. Select the Eraser tool and carve out your shapes.
  3. Bring your shape to the front (Object > Arrange > Bring to front).
  4. Ungroup the type and group the text you want to use.
  5. Select the shape and the type.
  6. Go to Object > Envelope Distort> Make with top object.
  7. Follow the same steps for any more shapes and type.

TYPE ON A PATH TOOL

  1. Create a shape and use the Type on Path tool to create your type.
  2. Copy the type by holding option and dragging from the mid point.
  3. Go to Type > Type on a Path > Type on a Path Options…
  4. Select flip and preview and select ascending in the drop down menu. You can experiment with the options to get the style you want.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

  • We recommend spending some time learning and getting used to using the keyboard shortcuts as they can make your workflow faster. Most main tools will have their keyboard shortcut next to them in the menus or you can check out the link shared above.
  • Have patience. Sometimes new tools can take time to learn. Making mistakes and learning from them is part of the process.
