Today we’re providing a tutorial on 3 of the ways the new Generative Fill AI (beta) might be useful, such as adding objects to images, removing objects and creating inspiring images from your rough sketches.
Before following the tutorial you will need to have downloaded the beta version of Photoshop. To do this go to your Creative Cloud app and go to Beta Apps in the left hand menu. Download the Photoshop Beta from there. This will not replace the version of Photoshop you currently have but will open a new version.
TO ADD OBJECTS:
- Open your image in Photoshop.
- Use the Rectangular Marquee tool or the Lasso tool and make your selection where you want to place an object
- Click on Generative Fill and type in your prompt e.g. add a MacBook to the desk.
- Now click Generate. There will be 3 options for you to choose from. Sometimes it will take several generations to get the right fit for what you want. Simply make a new selection and try again. Sometimes experimenting with more specific prompts can help.
TO REMOVE OBJECTS:
- Open your image in Photoshop.
- Use the Rectangular Marquee tool or the Lasso tool and make your selection of the object you want to remove.
- Click on Generative Fill and type in your prompt e.g. remove birds or just remove.
- Now click Generate. There will be 3 options for you to choose from. Again if you don’t like any of the 3 options, make a new selection and try again. Out of all of the methods we found this the best at getting right first time.
TO CREATE IMAGES FROM ROUGH SKETCHES:
- Create your rough sketch using different colours for each of the elements you want to generate.
- Then go to Quick Mask Mode (bottom of your tool bar or Q).
- Go to Edit > Fill, choose Colour and add a 70% grey fill in the black (B). Experimenting with this percentage will change the results you get.
- Exit Quick Mask Mode (bottom of your tool bar or Q).
- Click on Generative Fill and type in your prompt e.g. spring landscape with 5 trees.
- Again like with the other methods it’s best to experiment a few times to try and get the best result.
In no way can AI tools replace your originality and creativity but they can be useful tools for editing and creating inspiring images. Have fun experimenting! We’d love to see what you create. Tag @makeitindesign on all socials.
