Stuck for an idea for a new pattern? Not sure what genre, style or subject to try next for your portfolio? Want to fill your portfolio with more variety? Then this creative tip is for you!
It’s simple, think of some topics such as ‘colour’, ‘genre’, ‘style’ or ‘era’, assign each one to a separate jar or container and write up several prompts for each topic to pop in.
Suggested Materials:
- Jars/ containers
- Colour chips (or you can simply write down a colour on paper)
- Paper and pen
Using the containers you will make separate sets of creative prompts. Each suggestion can be folded and placed in the relevant container. Next time you are feeling uninspired, pull out the jars and pull at random to influence your next design!
TOPIC suggestions:
COLOUR: You could use paint colour chips sourced for free at your local DIY store or alternatively make a list and try to be descriptive as possible such as limeade, post box red, rainbow, metallic etc.
OBJECTS: Fairground, utensils, transport, buildings
PATTERN: Chevron, spots, geometric, stripes, abstract, oversized, ditsy, shapes, blocks
STYLE: Painterly, hand-drawn, stylised, graphic, bold, delicate
NATURE: Jungle, ocean, animals, insects, leaves, flowers
ERA: Art deco, vintage, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, retro
Have fun!
