Today’s designer interview is with Saskia Van Cleef-Megens from Haakje Sluiten design studio
When did your interest in design first start and how did that come about?
My interest in fashion and design increased through the years. I wanted to combine both fashion and graphic design and started designing my own fabrics in the summer of 2012.
What steps did you take to get to where you are now as a designer?
I have participated in various training programmes focused on fashion design, graphic design and interaction design to increase my knowledge about designing. I have also worked for an international company to gain practical experience in graphic designing. In my spare time I’ve created my own brand identity which includes a website, logo design, business card and invoice.
In the last few years my interest in surface design became bigger and has resulted in designing my own fabrics. I create my own clothes, toys and interior with the fabrics I’ve designed. I have made an Etsy page where people can see and buy my creations. I also participate in the ‘Art and business of Surface design course’ to learn more about all aspects of surface design.
What was the most important lesson you took away from “The Art and business of Surface Pattern” e-course?
I have learned to design coordinated pieces with an instant professional look to expand my portfolio.
What difference did it make to have a supportive community of fellow students and how important do you think that will be going forward?
I was inspired by the creations of other people and the feedback they gave about my own designs. It is also a nice way to increase my network.
How would you describe your style?
My style is graphic with a freeminded twist. I get inspired by nature and characters. My creations are intended for kids and women.
What kind of designer do you want to be known as?
As a professional and creative person who is able to pursue a task with persistence and great responsibility. Eye for detail and motivated for challenges.
What are you working on currently?
I’m designing fabrics, inspired by geometric patterns. I will use this fabric to create new clothes.
What advice would you give emerging designers wanting to build their portfolios?
Start with creating your brand. Choose a name, create a professional portfolio/ website, a nice logo design, business card and invoice. Use social media to increase your network. Participate in contests of designing to create awareness of your designs and portfolio.
What would be your dream design gig?
I would like to have my own fashion label, with all kind of skirts created with my own fabrics.
Looking ahead what are your major goals for the next couple of years?
I would like to design more collections and expand my portfolio. I also want to increase my network to gain more publicity and I want to develop my sewing skills.
If you were a pattern what kind of a pattern would you be and why?
A geometric pattern. Those patterns reflects my personality, it radiates creativity, collaboration and an ongoing process.
My job as a graphic designer for an international company didn’t please me because of a lack of freedom when it comes to designing.
I wanted to make a change and started to design my own fabrics in the summer of 2012. I have created an own brand identity called “Haakje Sluiten”, took part in sewing classes to improve my skills and have created several items, such as clothes and toys, for kids and adults.
