We are delighted to bring you an exclusive preview of the pattern that will be on the next UPPERCASE Magazine cover and used as a motif throughout Issue 28.
UPPERCASE publisher, editor and designer Janine Vangool tells us “The forthcoming issue is a very eclectic one — the topics include artwork made with wire, the idea of connection and collaboration, letting the creative subconscious play through scribbles and doodles, plus the visual inspiration of numbers.
I was inspired by the design of this vintage bus pass from the collection of Kindra Murphy. The three radiating lines made me think of an electrical plug and wire and so I began by drawing a simple square motif with three prongs. Echoing the decoration surrounding the number 8, I then rotated the prongs around the square. As I experimented with repeat patterns, a happy accident emerged: with the prongs offset just a bit from one another, they create a bit of a lightning bolt. To me, this represents the creative spark that comes through collaboration. The pattern has a nice vintage feel”.
The full cover design will be revealed later today through the UPPERCASE Magazine newsletter and shop.
Subscriber* copies of the next issue of UPPERCASE will include a special 32-page calendar that’s all set for colouring. The cover is illustrated by Tara Lilly.
