CREATIVE TIP OF THE WEEK – How to create a morphing effect in Adobe Illustrator

How to create a morphing effect in Adobe Illustrator. Looking for new ways to make your designs dynamic and fun? This is the effect for you!

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Create your shape, duplicate it and make the second shape smaller.
  2. Select both shapes and go to Window> Pathfinder.
  3. In the drop down menu in the top right of the Pathfinder palette choose Make Compound Shape.
  4. Now go to Window> Appearance.
  5. Click the effects menu (fx) at the bottom of the Appearance palette and go to Path > Offset Path.
  6. Add your measurement and choose Round in the drop down menu and click OK.
  7. Go to Path > Offset Path again and when the pop up comes up click Apply New Effect.
  8. This time put a minus (-) before your dimension but choose Round again in the droop down menu and click OK.
  9. With the Direct Selection Tool you can now move your shapes around with a morphing effect.

TIPS:

  • This effect can be created with other shapes and even outlined fonts.
  • This effect looks best with a gradient but also works with solid colour.
  • You can duplicate the shapes and resize them to add even more movement.
