CREATIVE TIP OF THE WEEK – How to use the Objects on Path tool in Adobe Illustrator

How to use the new Objects on Path tool from the recent Adobe Illustrator update. Organising your shapes and motifs has never been easier!

 

 

Instructions on adding your objects to a path:

  1. Create your path, in this instance we have used the Ellipse tool to create a circle.
  2. Select your motifs on go to your toolbar (advanced) and select the Objects on Path tool. You can also find this in the menu: Object> Objects on Path.
  3. Now click on your selected path. Your objects have now been arranged on the path with equal spacing.

How to change the spacing:

Grab the button with the two arrows and drag either direction to increase or decrease the spacing.

How to rotate:

Grab the button with the circular arrow and use it to rotate your objects.

How to move an object to a different part of the path:

Grab the circle button in the middle of your motif and drag it to where you want to move it to. Your motifs will still stay an equal distance apart.

How to add additional objects:

Use the direct selection tool and click and drag the object you want to copy with Shift and Option selected on your keyboard.

TIPS:

  • Be sure to play and experiment with the many different composition options this can create.
  • This tool works great with all kinds of objects from graphic to hand drawn to typography.
  • This tool also works on hand drawn paths so have fun with it!
