ALL ABOUT LUCY…
- What initially drew you to your field and what steps did you take to pursue it?
I came to costume via social history, which excites me because it’s about people, and clothes can tell their stories.
- Can you briefly share on the evolution of your career / business?
After two university degrees and a lot of travelling I set up a business in the heritage industry, looking to present history in a lively yet well-researched way. This evolved into the wonderful History Wardrobe company.
- What has been the most important lesson you have learnt along the way?
Over the last twenty years I’ve learned that curiosity and courage are crucial, to keep your work fresh and to help you past self-doubt and difficult times.
- What excites you the most about your job / field you work in, and why?
I love the long, lonely hours of research, then the buzz of being around people – sharing ideas and gathering stories.

- We spotted on your website that you collect historic costume pieces. What is your all time favourite piece?
I adore antique textiles and vintage clothes, so my collection is always growing. One of my most magical items is a woven silk skirt from the 18th century. The colours are still incredibly vivid.

- What costume piece are you currently on the hunt for?
Right now I’m gathering stories and garments from the 1940s. The ultimate ‘treasure’ from this decade would be a siren suit. I’ve seen patterns for knitted air-raid garments, so I’ll keep searching…
- You also do events – can you take us through the highlights of a History Wardrobe presentation?
History Wardrobe presentations invite audiences across the UK to appreciate amazing clothes being worn as well as displayed. We aim to dazzle and delight with a combination of fashion and history. Nothing is behind glass – it’s all there to be seen and enjoyed.
- Can you tell us about your books and share on your upcoming book The Red Ribbon?
As well as writing non-fiction based around my collection and archives – such as Great War Fashion and Stitches in Time – I’ve woven clothes through my new novel The Red Ribbon, which is inspired by a startling piece of wartime history – the dressmakers of Auschwitz.
- Where do you seek / source inspiration from when writing?
My advice for aspiring authors is to share what excites or intrigues them. And to write!
- What is the next big dream for you as an author / creative business owner?
History Wardrobe is always evolving, with new presentations each year and new publications being planned. When you do what you love for a living, creativity flourishes!
