Last Friday, Lisa Moncrieff, sales and marketing manager at Make it in Design had the pleasure of meeting Cath Kidston when she attend PAPERFEST in London.
With an audience of over 100 creatives, Cath took to the stage to share her story and participate in a Q&A. Afterwards there was time for her to meet members of the audience, sign books and pose for photos.
Cath is a very down to earth woman who is proud of what she’s achieved and in the success of her business, but has been overwhelmed by the enormity of it explaining; “I was proud to build a brand but I never expected to build an empire.”
Cath spoke about where it all started, why she’d chosen the licensing partners (such as Millets and Ikea) she had, some of the mistakes she’d made along the way, finances and fears, her feelings on her team expanding to support her growing business and why her brand doesn’t conform to trends – read the full story and all the details from the event in a later edition of MOYO magazine.

Answers to their questions
What piece of advice would you give yourself as a young creative? – question from our winner Victoria
“Great question” she responded. She pondered for a few minutes, was about to speak, then paused, re-thought and answered “I’d probably say be brave and just go for it!” She then went on to say “Learn how to say no, take on projects that feel right and excite you, be confident in your products and ask for help.”
What does your typical day look like now? – question from our winner Ayesha
Cath now sits on the board of the company and is only involved at a high level. She is very much enjoying the freedom to take in the sights, visit museums, travel and shop and she’s taken on a design project at home but didn’t go into any further detail. She joyfully explained; “I feel like a kid on a gap year not going to work every day!”
Cath also admits to not being very good on a computer and so will be spending the next year learning how to design on the computer and use it better.
