At Make it in Design, we’re passionate about giving you the confidence and skills to do what you love, to fulfil your dreams, and to embark on the career you’ve always wanted. Often times, that involves spending our days being creative and productive, and ultimately maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
For many of our students and alumni, occasional or full-time freelancing is a great way to achieve a creative and flexible working life. Freelancers and other independent professionals can not only decide where to focus their creative efforts, they can choose who they work with, when and where they work, and can simply be their own boss!
Our co-founders Rachael Taylor and Beth Kempton are huge advocates of working independently, and the success they have found in their individual and joint career journeys are a brilliant example of how freelancing can lead you to professional and personal happiness. Other members of the Make it in Design have also seen great strides in their career through taking on freelance projects and are equally passionate about helping others achieve the same level of freedom and flexibility in their careers.
As part of our ongoing encouragement and support for current or aspiring freelancers, Make it in Design want to promote National Freelancers Day to our blog readers, students, and social followers. Taking place on Thursday, 8th of June, this year’s NFD marks the 9th annual nationwide celebration of 1.9 million independent professionals taking ownership of their career path.
We would like to encourage any freelancer (or anyone considering freelancing) to attend the celebrations, which will be held in King’s Place in Central London. The day promises to be incredibly inspiring and resourceful, and attendees of the NFD celebrations can expect expert advice from global brands via panel sessions and talks throughout the day, along with a wealth of socialising and networking opportunities. If you cant make the London event, there will also be Fringe Events in both Bristol and Manchester.
Here are some photos from past events that we thought it would be great to share:
If you’re in need of guidance in your freelance career, there will also be open access to the experts from IPSE (The Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-employed), who have supported remote / freelance workers for over 18 years. The IPSE describe themselves as, “the voice of independent professionals,” saying that they “make sure freelancers, interim managers, consultants and contractors are represented to Government by producing insightful, hard-hitting research and effective policy campaigns.”
The IPSE also fight for better legislation to help the self-employed, offer legal advice, and are ultimately there to help freelancers run their businesses with peace of mind. Independent professionals can join the IPSE as members, which gives them access to many benefits and protections (you can find out more here).
The ISPE is also hosting a competition (closing today!) which calls on the self-employed stars of today and tomorrow to tell them why they should be crowned the UK’s best independent professional. Those who enter could be awarded up to £5,000 to put towards their business. If you find some extra time, we encourage you to apply!
So if you’re looking to get that extra bit of support in your freelance career, need advice, want to network, or are simply considering a career transition into independent working, be sure to take a look at what National Freelancers Day is all about.
