Here at Make it in Design we are on the countdown to the start of a new term of classes which commence February 1 with Module 1: Designing Your Way and Module 2: Creating your Professional Identity. Therefore we are really pleased to bring you part 3 of our 4-part showcase of the beautiful work from our very talented Module 1 students of The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design who took the course in September 2015. Here are some of our wonderful students and the work they have created over the 5 weeks in class.
“The most powerful element of the course for me has been learning how to transform my sketches and doodles into “motifs,” that become surface pattern designs! Seeing my motifs as patterns has given me a huge boost of confidence in developing my identity as a designer”.
Karen Curtin | Website
‘The most important aspect of this course for me was getting away from my computer, going back to the basics of creating and getting messy. Freeing up your thought process and your practical process really helps to push designs that bit further.’
Kate Fearn, Petite Circus | Website
“The most enjoyable and powerful element of the course so far has been to go back to basics and re-evaluate my own design style. This has been one of the most thorough and rewarding courses that I have ever been on! Huge thanks to Rachael and the team”.
Katie Derry |
“The course structure and content was brilliant and the interaction and support with all the other members of the course was invaluable. It has given me the tools and confidence to pursue a career as a surface pattern designer”.
Katie Moore | Website
“The most powerful element of the course for me was the importance of colour. Before the Make It In Design course, I didn’t appreciate its importance and how much it can influence the mood of the design. Colour has since become a great tool to help me to create more dynamic patterns”.
Kelly Kratzing | Website
“The course did give me a lot of basic information and it opened my eyes, so I did explore more in experimenting new stuff, I did work a lot in watercolors and it give me a confidence to sketch, to explore composition, colour combinations, and all the peoples in the class are amazing, it is like you could talk in your favorite object all day long, and every time you will learn something new. The experience is unbelievable, I could see the world differently”.
Lidija Miklavcic | Website
“Module 1 is an absolutely amazing class. My favorite part of the class was the Reviews of everyone’s work. Thank you, thank you, thank you”.
Lori Ann Woodard | Website
Module 1 has opened up a whole new world to me! It has made me excited about the doodles in my many sketchpads and I have learned so much. I am motivated about my artwork and keen to explore the world of Surface Pattern design further!

“The course has opened my eyes to many skills I need to work on and given me hope that (with a lot of hard work) I could make my dreams into a reality”.
Louise Hargreaves |
“I’ve really enjoyed the first module on this course, I’ve found the Facebook community group incredibly helpful as everyone supports each other. Someone is always there to offer help or their opinions and it has been a great way to connect with so many like minded people! I can’t wait for the next 2 modules”.

“Fantastic course – it really showed me a new and fun approach to graphic design. I re-do all the exercises after the course has finished and I have a great time – still learning”.
Malene Ronnenberg Kirk | Website
“This course has been so inspiring and informative. Turning my basic sketches into surface pattern concepts is so fulfilling and addictive. The possibilities for me are now endless”.
Maria Ofili | Twitter
“I enjoyed discovering many new and exciting ways in which to create motifs, color palettes and patterns. The assignments got me to challenge myself in new ways and to approach designing patterns in a more well rounded way”.
Marie Coons | Website
“The course has reignited my passion for art. It has also changed the way I look at the world. Now every flower or random beautiful colour composition I see is alive with possibilities! Thanks for showing me how to find and use colour. And thanks for inspiring me to draw, take photos, experiment and see the world through different eyes”.
Marie Green |
“For me the most powerful element of the course was helping me to find my design style. Starting from the sketches in the first few weeks, taking photos, looking at the inspiration all around us, to beginner moments on photoshop I feel a new sense of confidence and momentum to attack the next 2 modules”.
Melissa Hyatt | Website
“Since taking the Module 1 course I have learnt to bring fun and energy into my artwork! After several years of working in the industry (through an agent) this has renewed a creative passion that I had somehow lost! Now, I am excited about my future”.
