We are thrilled to bring you part 3 of our 5-part showcase of the beautiful and amazing work from our very talented Module 2 students of The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design who took the course in April 2016. The most important part of the course, for me, at this time, has been the branding. It’s made me think about how I would like other people to see my work. The rest of the course is awesome too!

What I really took away from this course was the information about building collections around trends. I was under the impression that a collection has to use the same motifs, when in fact there are many different ideas that a collection can be build around (i.e. color).

Module 2 has been truly groundbreaking for me. As well as building up my artistic skills and technical knowledge, it has encouraged me to delve deep when developing my brand identity. I now feel excited and ready to build upon this initial base, knowing that my brand will be true reflection of my creative style.

I am still working on Module 2, taking my time through the branding section. Make It In Design is sharing so much information, it takes a bit of time to take it all in. I so appreciate the MIID team providing so many useful guidelines, in such a way that is easy to understand and work through in our own way.

I am very new to the art of Pattern Design & I am so glad that I took this course! You get so caught up in your own “Bubble”, that it is hard to imagine creating in a different way, using different techniques & opening your mind to all the possibilities. Being new to designing for intentional “professional” purposes, this course has really opened my eyes & mind to all that should be considered–colors, trends, style, brand image, world events–& the different techniques that can be used to expand your own personal style. This course has really helped me do that!

Module 2 has really helped me to understand more about the Surface Pattern design industry, especially trend forecasting and the importance of having a strong brand identity. It’s packed full of interesting design briefs and amazing guidance on how to approach them, whilst staying true to your personal style. I’ve loved every minute and can’t wait for Module 3!

Rachael continually said that it’s okay to make mistakes when learning the technical part of designing. Just hearing her say that made me relax and enjoy learning process of Illustrator and Photoshop…. I learned to just trust myself more.

I have so enjoyed continuing with Module 2.There is so much information and I have really enjoyed soaking it up like a sponge. I’m continually finding myself learning and wanting to push myself to do the best I can. It’s just what I needed after becoming so rusty from lack of drawing and digital knowledge.

Module 2 has given me invaluable insights into the industry and the opportunity to gain an amazing amount of support from the Make it in Design community. It has helped me to push past my boundaries and reach new heights!

The most powerful element of the course for me was being more aware of trends across all markets; looking at the bigger picture, keeping an open mind and looking at everything around you. This will help me develop even more as a designer.

I absolutely loved participating in Module 2; the amount of information provided and skills learnt was huge. A big plus for me is the community of online design friends I’ve made that continue to support one another long after the course has finished. I’m walking away with a huge confidence boost in my designs and my ability, with a passion to keep designing and working on my own style, the sky is my limit!

I have thoroughly enjoyed Module 2 and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to pursue a career in pattern surface design.
I loved doing the briefs found them very helpful and also have found the information i.e. trend forecasting etc. so useful. I think a lot of the insider information provided by your course would take someone along time to gather for themselves.

I haven’t completed the course yet but it’s already made me think about my work in a completely different way. Can’t wait to complete all the exercises knowing that after that I will be well on my way to finding my own style and having a strong individual brand that’s true to me.

The most powerful element of the ABSPD Module 2 for me has been developing my technical skills. It has also drawn out my creativity, stimulated idea generation by showing how trends can be used and helped me apply my designs to products – really exciting!

The assignments really helped push me further in developing my surface pattern design skills especially with the videos and sample product briefs, they are just fantastic resource to learn about industry standards! The technical knowledge I learned through the course’s content has given me confidence to mock up any products with my surface design creations including designing my own templates. I needed to learn those skills, greatly. How Rachael shared her technical skills for pattern making catapulted me to really understand both AI & PS software so much more than I originally did. Thank you! – Even my patterns thank you! :)
