We love to hear from our ABSPD students so were thrilled to hear from this group of lovely students about their recent meet up in Sydney.
“After doing the ABSPD modules 1 – 3, a few of us from Sydney decided to get together and meet up face-to-face. We met at the Art Gallery of NSW, with the intention of also viewing some of the art on exhibition. But time got away and we were so enjoying meeting and chatting about all manner of design-related topics that we never got around to viewing any art! It was fantastic to put faces to names, and to hear what each of us hopes to achieve from our creative journeys. It is also great to know that there is a support group for us closer to home, and we are working on having regular catchups.”

Having enjoyed my combined art degree at Bath Spa University, my career took me on a marketing path specialising in communications. After moving to Australia and having children I was looking for a new career option and retrained in Graphic Design. It was only then I discovered surface pattern design and the Make It In Design courses. Having completed modules 1 – 3 my style is still evolving yet I enjoy hand drawing on the computer and watching as my patterns evolve on screen, while occasionally including watercolour elements.
I am currently freelancing as a Graphic Designer and I sell my range of children’s watercolours at markets and online.

I have a degree in visual art and have worked in advertising and as a graphic designer for some time.
I have also been decorating all manner of surfaces including walls, paper, canvas, fabric and ceramics.
After taking the ABSPD modules 1-3, I have been completely seduced by the limitless possibilities that pattern design provides. My process usually begins with working in my sketchbook with pen or watercolour or cut paper. I then transform that work digitally into patterns and designs. I love a graphic, clean style of design and love bright, bold colour. I have really enjoyed interacting with the amazing and supportive ABSPD community and am very excited about the next stage in my surface pattern design career!

Two of my greatest passions in life to date would have to be travel and design. And as I’ve been fortunate to have travelled quite a bit, I tend to draw inspiration from my travels for my designs. Working as both a visual merchandiser and graphic designer has also provided an outlet for my creative flair and interest in design.
ABSPD modules 1 through to 3 have introduced me to a brand new chapter in my journey – the world of surface pattern design. I’m really enjoying the Ultimate Portfolio Builder course which is encouraging me to push the boundaries by exploring new ideas and designs. Typically, most of my work starts out as a series of sketches which I then import into the computer for further refinement. I love experimenting with colour as well as different techniques
One of things I’ve loved most about the ABSPD courses is sharing the experience with people from all over the world. Like-minded people, who like me, are keen to explore and further develop their skills. It has been fantastic so far and I’m looking forward to learning and experimenting more!

I studied Creative Art & Surface Design at The International School of Colour and Design a couple of years ago, and signed up for the ABSPD modules to improve my technical skills, and gain confidence in my style. Throughout the courses I have discovered my love for illustration on top of my pattern obsession, and have gained a creative group of inspiring friends/fellow designers that I am incredibly grateful for!
My work is mostly hand drawn/ painted, full off tiny details and swirly motifs. I currently create commissioned pieces that range from logos and gift cards, to quirky illustrations and patterned pet portraits!
I’m interested in licensing patterns and would also love to manufacture my own products- particularly art prints, stationery, scarves and homewares, and I would love to explore more illustrating opportunities.

After graduating many years ago with an honours degree in Art History and Psychology, I went on to study art at Sotheby’s in London. I continued to work mainly in art research and art galleries in various places around the world. My work experience has always been on the other side of the fence, the business side of art, but what I always wanted to do was actually make the art!
A few years ago I went back to study part time and completed a diploma in Surface Design here in Sydney. Following that I completed modules 1-3 of the Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design which has been absolutely brilliant and has provided me with so many of the tools to succeed in this industry. I still have so much to learn but I’m definitely on the right path and loving every minute of it!
Meeting up with fellow artists here in Sydney was a wonderful opportunity to engage with like-minded people. We didn’t stop talking for a minute and I’m sure we will all continue to support each other in our artistic journey for a long time to come!
