Mayla Liberato Demanboro is a surface pattern and graphic designer living and working in Brazil. An advertising and marketing graduate, Mayla has extensive experience working with consumer brand leaders on advertising, packaging and visual in-store merchandising.
We are pleased to share this interview with you today and showcase some of Mayla’s lovely work.
When did your interest in design first start and how did that come about?
As a kid I drew a lot, it was one of my favorite things in life. When I grew up and had to choose a profession, I discovered within design a chance to work with my hobby. And that’s how it all began.
What steps did you take to get to where you are now as a designer?
At seventeen I started attending Advertising and Marketing classes in Brazil, and I worked in different areas during my academic training (sales, events, marketing, customer service, design). After graduating I lived one year in Australia and then I worked two years in the administrative field, and during that time I met and fell in love with pattern design. So, I spent three months building a portfolio that I liked and dedicated myself exclusively to work from my home office. I began to present my work for many clients around the world, and soon I began to close two-year contracts and partner with companies. It was great, everything happened very fast.
How would you describe your style?
I love challenges, I am always trying new things, and this is clearly reflected in my work. I have a very versatile drawing experience with the ability to design many different styles, but my art definitely has a feminine soul.
What kind of designer do you want to be known as?
I would like to be known as a versatile pattern designer.
What are you working on currently?
I work on licensing images for companies around the world. My current clients are Be Diff (fabric company) Keka Case (cases design group), World Post (packaging company) and Bali Blue (beach accessory brand).
What advice would you give emerging designers wanting to build their portfolios?
Your portfolio should be the very best examples of your work, therefore, choose items that showcase your skills and choose work samples relevant to the job you’re seeking.
What would be your dream design gig?
Develop many patterns for a large stationery company. That’s my passion.
Looking ahead what are your major goals for the next couple of years?
Establish myself in the global market of stationery and pattern design.
If you were a pattern what kind of a pattern would you be and why?
I’d be a butterfly pattern, because I seek and love transformation.
