CREATIVE TIP OF THE WEEK – How to create a custom pattern brush in Adobe Illustrator

How to create a custom pattern brush in Adobe Illustrator. A quick and easy tutorial on how to create your own custom pattern brushes to jazz up your typography, motifs and shapes.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Create your pattern and format it so that it is long and thin.
  2. Group your pattern.
  3. Select your pattern and go to Window> Brushes and click the plus button on bottom of the palette to create a new brush.
  4. Name your brush and click OK.
  5. Draw your word with the pencil or paintbrush tools or create your shape or motif.
  6. Select your word, motif or shape and select the new brush you have made from the Brushes palette.

TIPS:

  • You may need to experiment with the size and length of your pattern so that it works for the word or motif you have created.
  • Experiment with different stroke sizes.
  • If you are working with typography, learning how to use the intertwine tool could elevate it.
