YAY! And drum roll please… it is time to unveil the winners of the 2021 Make it in Design Scholarship in association with Print & Pattern.
Once again, we have been completely WOWED by the array of beautiful design entries. We had over 130 entries from all over the world!
Our esteemed panel of judges had such an enjoyable time reviewing all of the AMAZING applications. We are absolutely thrilled to see that so many people want to make surface pattern design a part of their creative journey and recognise Make it in Design as a fantastic way to do that. Thank You – it’s a true honour for us!
Entries were shortlisted by Make it in Design co-founders Rachael Taylor and Beth Kempton following which Marie Perkins of the Print & Pattern blog joined the panel to select the final winners.
As the standard of entries is so incredibly high, we have not just one winner, but will offer THREE full scholarships and SIX runners up prizes.
Our panel of judges said:
“Every year we have the ultimate honour, privilege and pleasure to look through all the fantastic scholarship submissions as submitted from all around the world.
There was a huge variety in the designs submitted this year, from bright sketchy cartoons to dark moody hyper real florals. It was great fun to look through all the work and see how even similar subjects can all be represented so differently.
All of us agree that it really is one of our favourite times of the year for Make it in Design!
We just LOVE pattern and colour are so looking forward to welcoming each of our winners and runners up into the Make it in Design community in 2021.
Congratulations to all our winners, and a HUGE thank you to everyone who entered – such a wealth of design talent”.
Beth Kempton, Marie Perkins and Rachael Taylor
The Winners
We are thrilled to announce our three scholarship winners:
Sonja Morris | Portugal/USA | @sonja_morris_birdagram
Marie Perkins of Print Pattern selected Sonja Morris as her overall winner.
“I love it when designers use colours that aren’t true to life and with Sonja, we have
wonderfully colourful sea creatures and a blue leopard. Combined with superb drawing skills and we have a winning combination.”
Daniela Glassop | Australia | @danielaglassop
Make it in Design co-founder Beth Kempton selected Daniela Glassop as her overall winner.
“I was struck by Daniela’s originality and vibrancy in her designs as soon as I saw them! The use of detail, textures, colour palette and her own individual interpretation of the icons and motifs in both designs really shines through. Her passion, enthusiasm and confidence in her own artistic voice gives leverage to her concepts into becoming successful and commercial products.”
Kim Bliss| USA | @kimblissdesign
Make it in Design co-founder Rachael Taylor selected Kim Bliss as her overall winner.
“Kim’s sense of colour and use of texture instantly drew me to her designs. The designs also have a beautiful unique, signature style that we can’t wait to help her nurture. Can’t wait to see what she does next on the courses!”
Congratulations Sonja, Daniela and Kim – you are our winners! Get ready to launch your surface pattern design career in 2021!
You each win:
- A free place on all 4 modules from Make it in Design

The Runners up
The standard of entries this year was again so high that we wanted to offer more prizes. Therefore, we have selected 6 runners up who will each receive a free place on a self paced module of your choice with access until December 31, 2021.
Emma Lawrence Peattie | Scotland, UK | @emmalawrencepeattie
“Emma’s symmetrical bird design is lovely, and I could imagine it used on many products, but it was her tree design that really blew me away. It’s so well stylised and full of beautiful detail. The colours are well thought out and I look forward to seeing more of her work.”
Hannah Beisang | USA | @hannahbeisang
“Hannah’s work was highly original with unexpected motifs. I loved the hand drawnfeel and her bold mark making. Her designs look confident and could develop intosomething commercial as she progresses.”
Delaney Ball | Wales, UK | @adoodleofdela
“I loved the unexpected placements in Dela’s concepts. The black and white line drawings coupled with the detail of the florals shows a rebellious approach and creates truly original designs. In addition, the clash of graphic styling with delicate illustration is what makes this work! I look forward to seeing how you evolve your creative voice!”
Amy Martin | USA | @byamymartin
“The handcrafted techniques utilised by Amy in her designs really demonstrates how working with a non-digital platform begins the success story! Seeing the transition from print making to finished concept is what grabbed my attention. I love the quietness in your approach and the imperfect feel of the motifs!”
Sumit Gill | Canada | @design.sumitgill
“They’re designs have such a lovely hand-painted quality and I’m just obsessed with the vibrant florals on a dark background. Stunning!”
Tracey Knight | UK | @traceyknight.art
“Tracey’s designs have such a fun and quirky mood and such beautiful illustration. The cats just really made me smile!”
We will be in touch with the winners and runners up directly by email with details of your prize. Thank you everyone, we are very excited to welcome you all to class.
