We are very excited to bring you a series of Surtex previews for the 2015 show taking place on May 17 – 19, 2015 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. Surtex is the only show in North America solely devoted to selling and licensing original art and design for all types of products.

We are delighted to share with you previews of the talented designers showing at Surtex on the Make it in Design blog over the next couple of weeks – enjoy!

How are you preparing for the show?

In 2014 I walked Surtex for the first time to make sure the show would be the right fit and next step for my career. (I encourage everyone to walk the show before you commit to exhibiting, since it’s a financial but also very time intensive investment.)
Once I made my decision I spend a lot of time doing a very thorough research including the ‘Lilla Rogers’ MATS A + B courses, reading blogs & e-books, and participating in Surtex webinars – In short: Getting my hands on as much information as possible to make sure I feel very well prepared.
The last couple of months I focused on creating tons of new work, but I also spend a lot of time working on marketing. My background in advertising and print production has helped me tremendously to create my first promo video, press kit and marketing materials – I can’t wait for May 17 (but I’m also a bit nervous)!

About

SusanneKasielke portrait Surtex 2015 Preview: Susanne Kasielke

I’m a German artist, illustrator and surface pattern designer based in the beautiful Washington DC area. I create vintage inspired digital collages that combine multiple mediums and techniques.
I work in very different styles from abstract mixed-media paintings to realistic pencil drawings, but I combine, alter and improve the different elements digitally. Coincidence and imperfection plays a big part in my work: I love to experiment with digital technology and a lot of layers to create unexpected texture and depth. My prints integrate hand-drawn and painted elements like pencil, watercolor, block print, and acrylics. I mainly create abstract and geometric collages, ethnic inspired art, animal prints and pencil illustrations.
