Today on the blog, we have a fantastic insight into the world of one of our talented alumni Alice Perry Designs‘. Alice has had some amazing opportunities come her way since finishing The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design, as various companies have been drawn to her gorgeous work and eye-catching colour palettes.

Alice Dart is a Devon based Surface Pattern Designer with a love for pattern, illustration, colour and stationery, working under her studio name ‘Alice Perry Designs’.

Alice has had a passion for surface pattern and illustration for as long as she can remember, as a child she would doodle, paint and draw so it’s no surprise now as an adult she has developed and established her design business ‘Alice Perry Designs’. Alice works from her studio in Devon, often with her trusty assistant Alfie (her beloved cat!).

I have taken all three modules of The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design and I can quite honestly say this was the start of an exciting new chapter for me. I already had a BA hons degree in Fashion, which is where my passion for surface pattern and illustration started, but at the time this was not a subject that seemed to be as specialised as it is today. The e-course came along at the perfect time and as soon as I saw it advertised I knew this was going to be perfect for me to not only specialise in surface pattern design but to become more knowledgeable in the business side of things. Setting up on your own business from scratch takes hard work and determination, you reach the point where you could easily give in but if you work though this stage and keep going things start to happen. The course helped me in every element of starting my business and being an e-course meant I could complete the modules and tasks as and when I had time.

“Taking the course really helped me develop my signature style and although I already had basic software skills it taught me specialised methods and techniques using Illustrator and Photoshop. The course is also a great place to meet fellow creatives. I still keep in touch with people from the course today. The main thing the course gave me was confidence, I don’t think I could have achieved so much without the extensive knowledge and support from all three modules.”

After completing the course modules I was set up and ready to go with a brand and business skills to put into practise, I got a licensing contract with Wallpapered.com from one of the live briefs on the course. I also have licensed designs with watch company May28th. I have gone on to work on several exciting freelance briefs for companies (one of which is for a company launching this year, I’m very excited to share this project once it’s launched). Most recently I became a partner with Not On The High Street selling my illustrations, This is such an exciting platform to be able to sell from, the images below are examples of some of the prints I have in my store, some of which can be personalised.

I’m now pushing my product range for my brand forward as well as working on freelance briefs. I have been featured on Print & Pattern, Tigerprint Designer Spotlight and other creative design blogs, I featured on the Mollie Makes blog after creating a downloadable digital wallpaper for them, this was so exciting as I’m a big Mollie Makes fan!

If you were to ask me if I’d recommend taking The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design I would say a big YES without a doubt, it gave me the foundations to running my own business, I couldn’t recommend it enough.
