As many of our readers will know, New Designers is a hugely exciting event for the Make it in Design team and our visiting or participating alumni. As official media parters of ND17, we are thrilled and honoured to take part in such an inspiring and influential show.
Labelled as “The UK’s most important exhibition for emerging design‘, this annual event delivers new generations of brilliant creative individuals, and allows emerging designers showcase their talent, gain valuable exposure through the attending media, connect with other designers, and experience exhibiting at a trade show.
As with our Surtex Previews, we are passionate about supporting the many talented and hard working artists taking on trade shows and exhibitions like New Designers throughout the year. We are also extremely proud that many of “The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design” e-course students have and continue to feature their work at ND.
In response to our New Designer exhibitors call-out, today we are excitedly sharing the work of two fabulous designers: Charlotte Bolton and Jodie Smith. We absolutely love the work of both of these talented designers and wish them the best of luck at the show!
Jodie Smith
- About the Designer
Jodie is an illustrator and surface pattern designer and her work is a combination of collage and linoprints combined with digital tools for a commercial appeal. Colour and playful narratives are important to Jodie’s work, meaning her designs lend themselves well to the children’s print industry.

Jodie will be exhibiting at New Designers Part One (28 June – 1 July) as part of the Leeds College of Art, on stand T14.
Charlotte Bolton
- About the Designer
Charlotte Bolton is a recent graduate from Leeds College of Art, where she studied Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design. Her practice is very process led, as she experiments with screen-printing, applique, and embellishment with an innovative approach to combining illustration with textiles. She is heavily inspired by Japanese Kawaii culture and Western popular culture, to create fun and playful designs that appease the kidult market. This is communicated through her cutesy illustrative drawing style, whimsical character designs, and kitsch, feminine colour palette, with playful, interactive elements to encourage a sense of childlike enjoyment.
