CREATIVE TIP OF THE WEEK: Irregular shapes in Adobe Illustrator

Using the join, pathfinder, pen, pencil and anchor tools in Adobe Illustrator we show you how to create unusual shapes for your designs that you can use in all kinds of cool ways.

 

 

Creating arched shapes

  • Move the circle into place and delete one side of the circle using the Direct Selection tool
  • Then select both the semi circle and rectangle shape and go to Object > Path > Join
  • Then open the Pathfinder palette, select your shape and click Unite

Creating pointed shapes

  • Move the diamond shape into place and using the Direct Selection tool delete one side
  • Then select both the triangle and rectangle shape and go to Object > Path > Join

Creating semi circles

  • Make a circle and using the Direct Selection tool delete one side of the circle
  • Select the semi circle and go to Object > Path > Join

Creating wobbly shapes

  • Make your shape
  • Then go to the Anchor Point tool (found under the Pen tool section) and play around with the anchor points and curve

Creating a quarter circle

  • Make a circle and using the Direct Selection tool delete one side of the circle
  • Then go to the Add Anchor Point tool (found under the Pen tool section) and add an anchor point half way down the semi circle
  • Then use the Direct Selection tool to remove the corner point
  • Select your quarter circle and go to Object > Path > Join
