New Designers exhibition opens THIS MONTH
This summer, catch a glimpse of our creative future at New Designers with a gathering of more than 3,000 of the brightest and most radical new creative minds all under one roof. Collectively launching the next generation of thinkers, makers and disruptors onto the UK design scene, join the celebration at the Business Design Centre in London’s Islington.
Opening on Wednesday 27 June, the exhibition is a two-week celebration of visionary design that sees students of 200+ creative courses from across the UK unveil never-before-seen work to thousands of industry professionals and design lovers. Expect to find the largest number of design disciplines showcased in one event, with Week 1 from 27-30 June presenting fashion, textiles, crafts, ceramics, jewellery and more, and Week 2 from 4-7 July, furniture, interiors, 3D design, product design, illustration & graphics, and more. Visitors can also expect to buy or commission directly from recently launched design entrepreneurs and studios, exhibiting in New Designers’ curated section – One Year In.
A sneak peak at themes and topics to find at ND18
Exploring conceptual design, this year’s New Designers of fashion and textiles tell personal stories using tailored techniques that aid self-expression and imaginatively depict the world as they see it. Read on to see how these designers and creatives express their thoughts on the world around them through knitwear, prints, fashion and textiles.
Hope Macaulay, Final Collection: The Surreal Rome,. Exhibiting with UCA Rochester, BA Fashion Textiles , stand T41
Inspired by Roman history and mythology, Hope Macaulay’s collection titled ‘The Surreal Rome’ explores the concept of visual surrealism. She combines knowledge on Roman mythical creatures and distorted photographs of Rome into colourful busy prints.
Kitty Lambton, Seeing Sense. Exhibiting with Glasgow School of Art (GSA), Silversmithing and jewellery, stand JC24
Kitty Lambton extracts textural shapes from her observation of objects in the environment around her. “Seeing Sense” provides an insight into how she creatively transforms this information on to screen. Emma reflects her visual language through the use of sensory printing methods such as flock and foils.
Lucy Isley, Switch Off. Exhibiting with Arts University Bournemouth, stand JC24
Lucy Isley explores the use of colour and fabric manipulation in her project ‘Switch Off’. This collection uses surface texture as a therapeutic property to combat symptoms associated with anxiety. Her choice of material and playful colour palette fits with her theme of escapism by promoting comfort and reassurance.
Juliet Wightman. Exhibiting with DMU, Textiles, Stand: T23
Juliet Wightman uses her technical understanding of knitwear to create innovative and experimental design work through knit construction of yarns and fibres. In this collection Juliet takes on a high fashion approach with her choice of colour palette and linear knitting technique.
