Surtex 2015 Preview: Rhiannon Connelly

We are very excited to bring you a series of Surtex previews for the 2015 show taking place on May 17 – 19, 2015 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. Surtex is the only show in North America solely devoted to selling and licensing original art and design for all types of products.

We are extremely proud of many of “The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design” e-course students and are pleased to be celebrating their success with them as they prepare for the show.

How are you preparing for the show?

My preparations for Surtex have been going on for quite a while. And I’m sure I’m no exception amongst the exhibitors that this has included creating as much artwork as I can , while taking care of all the practical elements too, such as getting new business cards made and having fun creating giveaway items.

Which ABSPD course have you taken?

I have taken all three modules.

With my current design work I feel that I’ve rather come full circle. In the past I was a professional silk painter, selling to shops like Liberty of London. At that time there were not the digital printing options that we have now and I felt I had taken an entirely hand made product as far as I could. This led to a period where I had a break from the world of design and instead became a professional photographer.
Attending the Do What You Love retreat four years ago sparked the return to painting and textiles and put me on the track I’ve been on ever since. The huge advance in technology has enabled me to work with hand painted designs in a way that I could not have dreamed of before.
